Have we seen the last game in Tampa of a first-time Hall of Famer, and one of the greatest ever to wear the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Uniform?
Only wide receiver Mike Evans holds the answer to that question.
In this article, I break down all the angles that could come into play and affect his decision on football for 2026.
Mike Evans is one of the best and most consistent wide receivers in NFL history.
Evans has only known Tampa as his home since beginning his career with the Buccaneers in 2014 as a first-round pick from Texas A@M.
He’s been a cornerstone of the franchise during his time in Tampa, leading the team in every major receiving category, all the while producing at an elite level.
Evans is at a crossroads in his career. Does he resign with the Bucs for the 2026 season and finish his career as a Buccaneer legend?
Does he retire? Evans is only 32. He still has a lot to offer both on the field and in the locker room.
Or, does he take his talents to a team that is on the cusp of winning a Super Bowl, like Buffalo or Kansas City, and take another shot at winning a Super Bowl ring?
The other option is to go back home and end his career with his hometown Houston Texans.
With free agency approaching March 8th, a decision on Mike Evans is fast approaching for the Buccaneers organization.
Evans last signed a two-year deal with the Buccaneers in 2024, and that contract has now expired.
Evans is a true free agent and will be in demand. We saw last season that when healthy, he still has all the tools to be an elite wide receiver in this league.
The Buccaneers have a bunch of needs on the roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Tampa needs depth at almost every defensive position, and it may be hard to work out an extension for Mike Evans that works for both sides, given the amount of money needed to shore up the defense.
The good news is that Evans has publicly expressed his affection for Tampa Bay, saying he would “love” to finish his career there. That sentiment carries a ton of weight — especially for a player who’s spent over a decade with one franchise.
But when finances get in the way, reality can be distorted.
The other wild card in the Mike Evans saga is, what does Jason Licht and the front office want to do?
Do they want Mike Evans back? And at what price? I believe with 100 percent certainty that the organization wants Mike Evans back in Tampa. They could extend him any time before free agency begins and put this issue to bed.
If you’re Jason Licht, can you afford to pay a lot of money to a 32-year-old receiver, who is on the back nine of his career, when there are so many other roster holes to fill?
Right now, the chances are 50-50 that Mike Evans will resign with Tampa Bay.
If we were to handicap the chances of Evans signing with another team, the odds would be about 25 percent that he leaves Tampa to join another organization.
And the odds are less than 25 percent that he retires and fades quietly into the sunset.
This will continue to be a huge storyline in Tampa and across the NFL and will only grow louder as free agency approaches.
