Nikita Kucherov brings smiles to fans wherever he plays. But on August 10, the Tampa Bay Lightning superstar created an especially memorable moment during a private offseason workout in Brandon.
It’s no secret that Kucherov prefers to keep both his on-ice and off-ice under the radar.
During the NHL season, that is nearly impossible. In the summer, however, the three-time Art Ross Trophy winner maintains a much lower profile – even when he trains at the Lightning’s practice facility.
Occasionally, fans sit in the stands to watch. They take pictures, hold up banners, and wait in hope of getting an autograph.
Because of the way the rink’s entrance and exit are designed, players can easily reach the locker room without interacting with anyone. That is understandable. These workouts are private training sessions, not official team practices or public events. Players’ space and privacy should always be respected.
Kucherov typically arrives, does his work, and quietly leaves. Despite being one of the greatest offensive players of his generation, he keeps to himself and expects others to give him the same courtesy. There is nothing wrong with that.
A Rare and Memorable Moment
But on August 10, fans at the rink were treated to a rare and memorable side of the Lightning superstar.
The 33-year-old forward first completed an individual session with his longtime skating coach and former Lightning forward Dmitry Afanasenkov. He then joined Brayden Point for shooting drills.
As Kucherov made his way toward the locker room, he could have quietly disappeared through the usual exit.
Instead, he stopped.
Kucherov signed autographs and took pictures with every person who had waited for him – from excited children to older Lightning fans. Nobody was overlooked.
It was a simple gesture, but it meant everything to those who were there. Within minutes, Kucherov had filled the rink with smiles and built memories that some of those fans will carry for the rest of their lives.
He probably never intended to make it a big moment. That is exactly what made it so special.
One of the NHL’s Biggest Bargains
While Kucherov gave fans a reason to smile, serious questions remain about his future in Tampa Bay.
He is entering the final season of the eight-year contract that carries a $9.5 million annual cap hit and expires after the 2026–27 season. That deal has become one of the biggest bargains in hockey. The Lightning originally signed him through 2026–27.
Kucherov is coming off another remarkable season. He recorded 130 points, including an incredible stretch of 107 points in 53 games. He produced at least four points nine times and was held without a point in only 16 games all season.
That performance earned him his second Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player. But is he valued by the current management team? No hint of new contract negotiations. What are they waiting for?
Kucherov’s Value in a Changing NHL Market
The NHL’s salary market has changed dramatically.
Young stars such as Macklin Celebrini and Leo Carlsson are set to earn close to twice Kucherov’s current salary, while Connor Bedard has secured a $15 million annual deal. They all signed extensions over the summer. What about the Lightning and Kucherov? Not a word….
Those players may represent the NHL’s future, but none has built a résumé comparable to Kucherov’s. He is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, a two-time Hart Trophy winner, and one of the most productive playoff performers of his era.
Age will undoubtedly be part of the contract discussion, but Kucherov has shown no signs of slowing down. His production remains elite, and his influence on the Lightning’s offense is impossible to replace.
Has Lightning Management Done Enough?
The larger concern is the direction of the team.
In recent offseasons, Lightning management has not done enough to strengthen a roster that has suffered four consecutive first-round playoff exits. Instead, they lost Nick Paul and Darren Raddysh. No contract extension with Kucherov has been announced, and there has been no progress toward securing his future.
After watching franchise captain Steven Stamkos leave (even though he was interested in staying), Lightning fans understand that nothing should be taken for granted.
Could Nikita Kucherov Leave Tampa Bay?
Kucherov loves Tampa, and Tampa loves him back.
But unless the Lightning show him that they are still serious about competing for another Stanley Cup, there is a real possibility that his next contract could be signed somewhere else.
And if that happens, it may not be because another team offered him more money.
It may be because another team offered him more appreciation.
