Lightning Prospect Gets Birthday Surprise in KHL

Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Daniil Pylenkov’s 26th birthday came with an unexpected visitor at center ice.

A Special Moment Before Puck Drop

Before Dynamo Moscow’s KHL game against Salavat Yulaev, Pylenkov’s 4-year-old daughter Daniela stepped onto the ice to perform the ceremonial puck drop. The Dynamo defenseman seemed unaware of the surprise.

The night did not end with a birthday win. Dynamo fell 3-1 to Salavat Yulaev, but Pylenkov still made an impact, picking up an assist on Artem Bondar’s second-period goal. The point gave him two goals and four assists through 10 games this season.

Pylenkov Adjusting to a New Dynamo System

Pylenkov remains one of Dynamo’s most-used defensemen, averaging more than 22 minutes of ice time per game. His ability to contribute at both ends of the ice has been a major part of his game.

This season also comes with an adjustment. Dynamo entered the year with a new coaching staff and a different system. Pylenkov is a two-way defenseman who can join the attack and create offense from the blue line, and finding the best way to use those strengths within the new structure remains part of Dynamo’s early-season process.

Another important fact is that Leonid Tambiyev lacks experience leading and head-coaching teams with higher expectations. He believes more in his old-fashioned system than in creative and skilled players. So the Moscow-based squad is struggling at the start of the KHL season.

For one night, though, the standings and Dynamo’s early-season adjustments took a back seat to a much sweeter moment – an unexpected birthday puck drop from Pylenkov’s daughter.

The Lightning selected Pylenkov in the seventh round (196th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft.
