Jason Licht Sends Clear Message on Baker Mayfield and Vita Vea: Buccaneers Aren’t Backing Down

As contract drama continues to swirl around two of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ biggest stars, general manager Jason Licht stepped to the podium on Thursday to deliver the organization’s clearest message yet. Baker Mayfield remains the franchise quarterback, and Vita Vea isn’t going anywhere.

Speaking to reporters after practice, Licht addressed the two biggest storylines surrounding training camp, attempting to calm the situation while reinforcing the Buccaneers’ long-term vision.

Jason Licht Shuts Down Trading Vita Vea

The most direct statement from Licht came when he spoke about Vita Vea’s trade request.

The veteran defensive tackle remains in a contract dispute with the organization and has been attending camp without participating fully because of what the team has described as a back issue.

It is also known as “Contractitis,” a condition that mysteriously pops up that prohibits the player from working out while trying to negotiate a new contract.

Rumors have intensified throughout the league, but Licht made Tampa Bay’s position unmistakable.

“We have no plans to trade Vita Vea,” Licht said, adding that the club continues to have productive conversations with Vea’s representatives.

That statement is significant.

While general managers leave themselves room to maneuver publicly, Licht chose to eliminate any doubt about the team’s intentions.

It doesn’t guarantee an extension will be done soon. It does signal the Buccaneers still view Vea as a cornerstone of Todd Bowles’ defense.

The Pro Bowl defensive tackle is one of the NFL’s premier run defenders and is still one of the league’s most disruptive interior linemen.

His ability to command double teams will allow edge rushers such as Yaya Diaby, Rueben Bain Jr., David Walker and the rest of Tampa Bay’s pass rush to create pressure.

The challenge now becomes finding common financial ground.

Vea enters the final season of his current contract with none of his 2026 salary guaranteed. This is thelast opportunity for both sides to negotiate before free agency becomes a realistic possibility.

Baker Mayfield Still the Franchise Quarterback

Licht was equally emphatic when discussing quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield publicly admitted he was disappointed contract negotiations stalled before training camp. Speculation naturally followed about whether Tampa Bay still viewed him as its long-term answer.

Licht put those questions to rest.

He reiterated that Mayfield remains the Buccaneers’ franchise quarterback. He also emphasized that the organization still intends to work toward a long-term extension despite negotiations being paused.

Those comments align with what the front office has consistently maintained throughout the offseason.

Mayfield has rewarded Tampa Bay’s faith since arriving in 2023. Over the past three seasons, he has thrown for more than 12,000 yards and 95 touchdowns. He has led the Buccaneers to multiple NFC South championships.

His resurgence has transformed what once looked like a short-term bridge signing into one of the league’s better quarterback success stories.

Still, quarterback contracts have exploded across the NFL, making negotiations increasingly complicated.

Mayfield made it clear before camp that football—not contract talks would now have his full attention. He said he would bet on himself once again.

Licht’s comments suggest the Buccaneers fully expect those negotiations to resume after the season.

Licht said he has talked to Mayfield and Baker is focused on the season. “I’ve had discussions with him. He’s focused on winning. I’ve never seen him this focused. He’s focused on having the best year of his career.”

Licht added that the franchise tag in 2027 is on the table if they needed to use that. Licht said that they fully expect to come to an agreement with Mayfield on a new contract.

A Delicate Balancing Act

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Licht’s press conference wasn’t simply what he said. It was the confidence with which he said it.

The Buccaneers are attempting to keep together a roster capable of competing for another NFC South title while navigating the realities of today’s salary cap.

Extending a franchise quarterback and rewarding one of the NFL’s elite defensive tackles simultaneously is no easy task.

Licht acknowledged that those conversations are never simple, but he also emphasized that the relationships with both players remain strong and that the organization values each of them.

Whether either deal gets completed before Week 1 remains uncertain.

What is certain is this: Tampa Bay has no intention of moving on from Vita Vea, and Jason Licht still believes Baker Mayfield is the quarterback capable of leading the franchise into its next chapter.

For a team with playoff aspirations in 2026, that public vote of confidence may be just as important as any contract that eventually gets signed.
