From Messi to Wrexham: How Raymond James Stadium Is Putting Tampa Bay on the Global Soccer Map

Raymond James Stadium continues to build Tampa Bay’s global sports reputation.

From Lionel Messi to Wrexham, Raymond James Stadium is helping establish Tampa Bay as one of North America’s emerging destinations for international soccer.

Another International Showcase

After welcoming international soccer fans for England’s pre-World Cup friendly against New Zealand in June, Raymond James Stadium is preparing to take center stage once again.

On Saturday, July 25, the home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host another high-profile international football matchup as Wrexham AFC takes on Leeds United in a preseason friendly. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with pregame Fan Zone activities designed to create a full matchday experience for fans.

The matchup is expected to attract supporters from across Florida and beyond. Wrexham’s dramatic rise and growing international following have turned the Welsh club into a global sports brand, while Leeds United remains one of England’s most historic and recognizable soccer teams.

Messi Helped Put the Spotlight on Tampa

The event is another example of Raymond James Stadium’s growing presence beyond American football.

On February 14, 2025, the stadium hosted an MLS preseason contest between Orlando City SC and Inter Miami CF. The Florida rivals played to a 2–2 draw, with global soccer legend Lionel Messi taking the field for Inter Miami. It was the first MLS match played at Raymond James Stadium since 2001. It demonstrated the level of attention Tampa can attract when international stars come to town.

Together, the Inter Miami-Orlando City match, England’s appearance, and the upcoming Wrexham-Leeds friendly match provide more proof that Tampa Bay is capable of hosting major global sporting events – not only NFL games, but also NHL showcases and other traditional American attractions.

More Than Football and Hockey

The region already has a strong soccer foundation. The Tampa Bay Rowdies compete in the USL Championship and play their home matches at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg. Their presence provides Tampa Bay with an established professional soccer culture and a committed local fan base throughout the year. There is also a growing fanbase for women’s soccer with the Tampa Bay Sun’s presence.

Raymond James Stadium, meanwhile, has the size, infrastructure, and experience required to welcome major crowds and global audiences. Known primarily as the home of the Buccaneers, the venue has also hosted Super Bowls, college football championships, concerts, and increasingly prominent soccer games.

Why Tampa Bay Deserves More

These events show the broader identity of a region that has earned the nickname “Champa Bay” through championships and sustained success across multiple sports. But Tampa Bay’s ambitions should go beyond its reputation as one of the best sports markets in the United States.

The area has the venues, professional organizations, passionate supporters, and tourism infrastructure necessary to compete for more international tournaments and special events. Hosting major soccer clubs and global stars allows the region to introduce itself to audiences who may know Miami, Orlando, or other American destinations but have yet to fully recognize the Tampa area’s sports culture.

The Wrexham-Leeds match represents another step in that direction. With international clubs, excited fans, and a full day of activities surrounding the game, Raymond James Stadium will once again serve as the backdrop for a global sporting occasion.

Tampa has already shown that it can host the world. Now, Champa Bay deserves more opportunities – and a viral reputation as one of the best sports cities not just in the United States, but anywhere in the world.
