It was not a good start for the Lightning. They didn’t learn a lesson from their first penalty for “too many men on the ice” 10 minutes into the opening period. The Bolts were able to neutralize the penalty, but they lost the momentum.
The Montreal Canadiens’ first goal exposed the Lightning’s defensive mistakes – it was coming for 15 seconds before it happened; both Tampa Bay Lightning blueliners, Moser and Raddysh, lost positional awareness, leaving their goalie all by himself. Anderson was quick at accepting a pass and sending a shot into a wide-open net.
Following Montreal’s celly, their strength in puck battles, rebounding, and physical play defined the first period. Tampa, on the other hand, appeared disorganized and slow. After struggling in the first 20 minutes, the Lightning improved and created more chances in the second period. They scored on the power play through Darren Raddysh, and just 30 seconds later, Brandon Hagel scored again. For a short time, the Bolts led the game. However, Tampa’s confidence was short-lived. Less than seven minutes later, Juraj Slafkovský scored on the power play after a pass from Ivan Demidov, making it 2-2 before the end of the second period.
There were also many questions about officiating. Some rough plays by Montreal went uncalled, while Tampa received penalties in controversial situations. Still, Tampa’s main problem wasn’t only the others. The defense was weak: poor positioning and insufficient effort in their zone caused issues. Additionally, they took four penalties in the offensive zone.
The Moser–Lilleberg penalty-kill pairing was ineffective, failing to pressure opponents, win puck battles, or maintain defensive integrity. The Montreal Canadiens leveraged a more physical play, and Tampa’s inability to respond exposed their lack of toughness. Consequently, Darren Raddysh was left overextended across all phases and lacked sufficient support: passing, scoring, and forechecking. It’s not a one-man job. In overtime, Erik Černák failed to stop the key shot from Slafkovský, who scored a hat trick. Overall, Tampa’s defensive performance was poor. So, some line modifications are expected for Game 2. The Lightning must play with more control and discipline. Andrei Vasilevskiy will need to be at his best to help the team recover.
As for prediction, another high-scoring game is unlikely. But Tampa must start stronger, stay organized, and try to score early in the next game.
